The Belize Zoo

Tapir, Belize Zoo, National Animal

Today we head to The Belize Zoo. This is not your ordinary Zoo, They are more of an animal education center. They take care of all kinds of local animals and educate people on these said animals. We have the Jaguar experience booked as well. Today I get up close to a Jaguar. OH MY GOD, a huge kitty!!!! I kind of love cats hahaha.

We get up early and finish packing our things as we say goodbye to Beautiful San Ignacio. Making some coffee we relax a little before we hit the road to head North. I have booked the Jaguar experience for 11 am. Placing our luggage in the car we start the drive to the Zoo. I feel sad leaving the west. It feels like I am leaving my home. I’m leaving a piece of my heart here as I truly have fallen in love with the area. I honestly do not want to leave here. Leaving the west I keep thinking there is so much more I want to do but we don’t have time on this trip.

Taking in the scenery we drive for about an hour before we reach the Belize zoo. It’s hot out and sunny. Feeling that I may end up sunburned I apply the Aveeno 110 SPF. Yes they do make it that strong. I am so happy they do. I burn easily.

We enter the Zoo and quickly speak with the attendant at the front to get our tickets for the Jaguar experience. With our map in hand we explore the zoo.

The first Animal we see is the Tapir. Being the National Animal we had to meet these beautiful animals. They were beautiful. Talking to Raymond I suggest when we go back I want to do the Tapir experience and meet these guys up close.

We saw Spider Monkeys, Gibnuts, Howler Monkeys (who again did not howl, I was starting to think they don’t make noise like people have said). We saw harpy Eagles, Ocelots, Margays, This really cool looking owl, Toucans and a lot of other birds. Off in the distance we could make out a crocodile. We met Coatimundies, and Jaguarmundies. Walking around we had a downpour of rain which honestly felt nice with all the humidity.

All these animals that were here at the zoo were here for rehabilitation purposes. Some of them will never be out in the wild again. We loved how they had their own areas that were open and they could roam and enjoy their days and nights here.  It didn’t really feel much like a zoo. As we were in their habitats and the animals were not in small cages.

We went and saw the Jaguars. Laying on a bed was a Jaguar named Sylvia. Relaxing in the shade. Lindo the other Jaguar was chilling on top of the cage that we were going to be put in when we got to meet him up close. They are beautiful cats however I would never want to come up close and personal with one in the wild. Their paws are huge. More on meeting Lindo in a separate blog.

After walking around the zoo and seeing all the beautiful animals of belize we headed to the Cafeteria there to have some food before we got on the road again to head into Corozal.  Raymond had fajitas, and I had my second meal of stew chicken with rice and beans. The food was really delicious and I ate as much of it as I could. The serving sizes here are enormous. I Seriously have no idea how you can eat all that food. After we ate we walked back to the parking area and got back in the car to head to Corozal.
