There is a Mayan mound on our property in Belize. The paperwork to transfer the land title and deed has been submitted to the Belizean Government and we now play a waiting game to get the physical deed to the land in our hands. This can take anywhere from 8 to 12 months to get back. As we wait, we have started making plans and how we can incorporate the Mayan mound in the plan.
We both had questions about the Mayan mound on the property. I was somewhat curious about what it was. Secretly hoping it was a building and not a crypt. We kept talking about what we would want to do with this ancient piece of the landscape after we had received the deed. We were told by the developer that if we wanted to remove the structure we could. Deep down I knew this wasn’t what I wanted. Knowing we will do whatever we need to do in the end to make our property usable.
Over the last few months, Raymond has been talking to a few neighbors who have been very helpful with answering some of the questions we had regarding the purchase. One neighbor even offered to have an archaeologist friend look at the property. He was visiting her property as she has ruins on hers as well.
She sent us videos of when he was visiting and assessing the mound to figure out what it may be. We have a heavily looted building on our site. Now I really want to excavate it and clean it up and keep it…If possible. I love that our property will have Mayan history on it. We want to see if we can fix it up. We know there are no “treasures”. I think the Mayan culture and history are fascinating which is yet another reason why I am excited to move to Santa Elena.
The Mound is in the front part of the property which means that we could put a driveway in and not disturb the mound…Hopefully. We plan to have the house built in the middle of the property. We like the idea of placing privacy walls up on both sides. Getting the chance to excavate the Mayan building would be a really cool project once we move. I hope to document the recovery process and the progress we see as we make this little lot our own.
