Here are a few things we learned about making the best of Belize.
- Try as much of the local cuisine as possible. You will not regret your decision. I know I enjoyed all the local food.
- Buy from the roadside vendors.
- Stop and talk to people. We had some of the best conversations at random times.
- When on tours ask questions we found out so many interesting things by just asking.
- Explore on your own. Saturday at the market and then around the town was the best day for us.
- Split your trip. We stayed in the West and then went North.
- Go to the Market in San Ignacio on Saturday it’s amazing to see all the local people out selling, purchasing, and socializing with each other
- Drink lots of Water.
- Go to the ruins and you won’t regret it.
- Take a drive down the hummingbird highway.
- Do a couple of day tours.
- Embrace the culture. I believe it was an amazing feeling to have someone wish you a good day or good night while out walking.
- Tip when you can a lot of people are only making minimum wage.
- Try the local fruits you have never heard of. You never know they may surprise you.
- Bring sunblock
- Buy good bug spray. Those mosquitos love to bite. That being said it was only 2 nights I got bit.
- If the bug bites are stinging and you have no afterbite. Use hand sanitizer on them. It will take the sting out for a short period of time.
- Take pictures but take the time to submerge yourself into the culture and the experience.
- Go to the Zoo.
- Don’t be disappointed when you go look for the Howler Monkeys and you don’t hear them. I was disappointed I never got to hear them.
- When packing take 1 pair of light pants this would be for if you are hiking in the jungle.
- Pack water shoes if you plan to do any cave tours or water activities.
- Relax and enjoy the experience, life is laid back and not as fast paced.
- Be Cautious however don’t be afraid to go places and talk to people.
- Speed bumps are a thing keep your eyes out for them as they are massive.
- Don’t limit your stay to one area.
- Do not drive at Night.
- Do Not bring high end items.
- Don’t be afraid to rent your own vehicle and drive to the place you are staying.
