Making the best of Belize.

Belize

Here are a few things we learned about making the best of Belize.

  • Try as much of the local cuisine as possible.  You will not regret your decision. I know I enjoyed all the local food.
  • Buy from the roadside vendors.
  • Stop and talk to people. We had some of the best conversations at random times.
  • When on tours ask questions we found out so many interesting things by just asking.
  • Explore on your own. Saturday at the market and then around the town was the best day for us.
Market, San Ignacio Market, San Ignacio, vacation
  • Split your trip. We stayed in the West and then went North.
  • Go to the Market in San Ignacio on Saturday it’s amazing to see all the local people out selling, purchasing, and socializing with each other
  • Drink lots of Water.
  • Go to the ruins and you won’t regret it.
  • Take a drive down the hummingbird highway.
  • Do a couple of day tours.
  • Embrace the culture. I believe it was an amazing feeling to have someone wish you a good day or good night while out walking.
  • Tip when you can a lot of people are only making minimum wage.
  • Try the local fruits you have never heard of. You never know they may surprise you.
  • Bring sunblock
  • Buy good bug spray. Those mosquitos love to bite. That being said it was only 2 nights I got bit.
  • If the bug bites are stinging and you have no afterbite. Use hand sanitizer on them. It will take the sting out for a short period of time.
  • Take pictures but take the time to submerge yourself into the culture and the experience.
  • Go to the Zoo.
  • Don’t be disappointed when you go look for the Howler Monkeys and you don’t hear them. I was disappointed I never got to hear them.
  • When packing take 1 pair of light pants this would be for if you are hiking in the jungle.
  • Pack water shoes if you plan to do any cave tours or water activities.
  • Relax and enjoy the experience, life is laid back and not as fast paced.
  • Be Cautious however don’t be afraid to go places and talk to people.
  • Speed bumps are a thing keep your eyes out for them as they are massive.
  • Don’t limit your stay to one area.
  • Do not drive at Night.
  • Do Not bring high end items.
  • Don’t be afraid to rent your own vehicle and drive to the place you are staying.
