This is how we spent our last day at Belize Airport. We woke up pretty early the last day in Corozal. We wanted to enjoy another beautiful morning by the ocean and get in as much of the warm fresh air as possible. I was feeling sad to be leaving this beautiful country today and heading back to cold snowy Canada. Wishing we were heading back to the west and not headed towards the airport in Belize City.
We slowly gathered our things and packed the few items that we purchased into our bags. Called Ivan so we could say goodbye before heading on our way. He popped down to say goodbye and collect the keys for the apartment. We loaded up the car and brought up google maps. We pulled out on the street and headed to Belize city.
The drive was breathtaking, Beautiful blue skies, bright greenery everywhere. We stopped at a gas station and grabbed some drinks and continued to drive. Passing little villages as we drove.
When we arrived to the airport I tried to get a photo of the leaving Belize sign however it ended up being blurry. I will have to get a better one next time. We pulled into the parking lot and parked the vehicle close to the rental agency (Budget). While I offloaded the car Raymond went in and returned the keys and signed all the remaining paperwork.
I took a deep breath and looked around my surroundings. One thing I knew for certain. I did not want to leave. Belize had stolen my heart. For the first time in a very long time I felt alive, full of energy, happy, relaxed, and content with who I am. I didn’t feel the weight of the world on my shoulders here. I felt at home. Surprising I felt like I belonged here. I have not felt like I belonged somewhere in a really long time. Here I was my true authentic self and it felt liberating.
We headed into the airport and checked in at the desk early. Went through security quite easily and went to find a place near the Boarding area. We had one more final meal of rice and beans with stew chicken. I voiced to Raymond that I did not want to see rice and beans for a month when we get back. Strangely enough 2 weeks after being home I looked at him and all I wanted was rice and beans. So we learned how to make the dish ourselves.
I am not going to go into the details about the flights back to Newfoundland. It was crazy chaotic and somewhat stressful. We were selected for COVID tests. Told very little information on what we should be doing once back in Canada. Spent the day with my brother and his family and flew back to Newfoundland the next day. We spent a couple of days at home to make sure we did not have COVID and then went back to work.
