A Foggy Morning Adventure
Waking up to a misty morning, we anticipated a day filled with discovery and adventure. Despite the overnight rain. The weather seemed promising as we prepared for our 9 am appointment at the Green Iguana Conservation Project. Nestled within the San Ignacio Resort Hotel. While I was bubbling with excitement like a child on Christmas morning. Raymond’s enthusiasm was more subdued. Nonetheless, this little escapade was my dream come true. And I couldn’t wait to immerse myself in nature’s embrace.
En route to Discovery
Arriving punctually, we met our guide and strolled through the lush grounds towards our destination. Amidst our walk, our guide engaged Raymond in a lively conversation about Belizean wildlife. Spinning a tale about crocodile encounters that had us momentarily on edge. Thankfully, his jest dissolved into laughter, reassuring us that crocodiles steered clear of human territory unless provoked. He cautioned us about the ferocious fleur de lance snake. Emphasizing the need for caution in the wild, given Belize’s diverse pit viper population.
Encounter with the Iguanas
Our anticipation peaked as we reached the sanctuary housing the iguanas. Guided by our enthusiastic host, we met the resident female iguanas, with the exception of a lone, colorful male basking on the rooftop. Amidst explanations of iguana behavior and reproduction, we learned about the sanctuary’s vital role in protecting these reptiles from illegal poaching and habitat loss. Holding one of the older females in my arms was a moment of pure joy, despite their cold touch. Our guide’s insights into iguana mating rituals underscored the importance of wildlife conservation and the detrimental effects of keeping exotic animals as pets.
A Glimpse into the Future
Our adventure continued as we entered the realm of baby iguanas, where most were destined for release into the wild upon reaching maturity. Reveling in the sensation of tiny reptilian claws on my skin, I joked about becoming a human tree as the iguanas clambered over me. The experience left me awestruck by the dedication of the “Iggy Hotel” to preserving these creatures’ natural habitat. With a heart full of gratitude, we bid farewell to our guide, still buzzing with excitement from our unforgettable morning.
Reflecting over Breakfast
As we savored a delicious breakfast on the hotel deck, fueled by invigorating coffee and lively conversation, we made a spontaneous decision to embark on further exploration along the hummingbird highway. With each sip, we reaffirmed our commitment to supporting initiatives like the Green Iguana Conservation Project, ensuring that future generations can experience the wonder of Belizean wildlife firsthand.
