Today let’s talk about the thought process of Getting an Electric bike vs Suv. When we were in Belize in February, We rented an SUV to get us around the beautiful country. We were traveling to the West first and then for the last leg of the journey we headed North. While in San Ignacio and Corozal we walked to most places. The reason was more for us to get out and enjoy being among local people. However, we soon found out that Gas was expensive there. Now coming from Newfoundland where we thought we saw high gas prices. We were surprised at how expensive gas was in Belize. For a half tank of gas to fill a Hyundai Santa Fe it cost $150 USD. So we walked taking in all the fresh air we could enjoy.
Seeing the price of Fuel there we started looking into other options for Transportation. Our land is roughly a 20-minute walk to downtown San Ignacio and mostly uphill on the way back. At first, we were thinking maybe a car. Then Raymond started looking into maybe a motorcycle. We looked into seeing what types of public transport there were. Like most areas, there are buses and cabs available to get to where you need to go. There are also shuttles that go to neighboring towns and countries. This would be a decent option if you wanted to take a trip to check out some other areas.
My thoughts had headed in a different direction. Thinking about how I wanted to be more physically active and live a healthier lifestyle. I started leaning toward bicycles. More importantly, I was leaning toward electric bicycles that have the option of paddle assist. This would be able to help with the hills and some other obstacles that we may encounter in Cayo District.
Excited to tell Raymond my thoughts I started showing him some videos of some electric bikes. Adding in that we are not aware right now of any businesses in Belize that may sell electric bikes. We will be doing a bit more research on them once we are there in January. All my research so far has been done online.
After looking at multiple brands of electric bikes two companies are standing out to us more than others. The RAD bikes and Himiway bikes. The more we look at their sites the more we lean toward these two companies. Now really it all depends on which company can get us our bikes to Belize. At first, I was all about the tricycle as it had a space on the back for a large basket and I was thinking it would be amazing for purchasing groceries and some larger items. After I watched the videos on them I decided they would not be a good option for me. Reason… I think I will struggle to maneuver these.
I am loving the idea of the step-through bikes from Rad. The RadRover and the RadRunner are the ones that I am leaning more towards. Raymond loves the look of the RadWagon and is very interested in this bike. We also like the Himiway Bikes the Escape is my favorite so far. Raymond’s response has been he likes them all with no particular one standing out. We still have a lot of research to do and I will update you with another blog real soon.
